Smetana's Vltava – A Journey Along the Bohemian River
This video takes you on a musical journey along the Vltava river, one of the most beloved symphonic poems ever written. Composed by the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana in 1874 – remarkably in just three weeks while completely deaf – Vltava is the second piece from his famous cycle Má vlast (My Homeland).
The music tells the story of the river from its very beginning to its grand arrival in Prague, and this video brings that story to life through carefully chosen visuals for each section of the piece.
The Two Springs
The journey begins at the source – two small springs bubbling up, one warm and one cold, depicted by delicate flutes that shimmer and intertwine.
The Main Theme – The Flow of the River
The most famous melody arrives as the river grows wide and powerful, flowing smoothly through the Bohemian landscape in a sweeping, majestic theme.
The Forest Hunt
The river passes through deep forests where hunting horns ring out boldly, evoking the energy and excitement of a hunt in full gallop.
The Village Wedding
Along the banks, a cheerful folk celebration is underway – a lively, dancing melody full of joy and the spirit of the countryside.
Moonlight – Dance of the Water Nymphs
Night falls over the river. The music becomes quiet and mysterious, with soft dreamy violins painting a magical moonlit scene.
The Rapids – St. John's Rapids
The river turns wild and fierce, crashing through rocks in the most powerful and intense passage of the entire piece.
Prague – Vyšehrad
The Vltava reaches Prague in triumph. The main theme returns grander and more majestic than ever, before the river slowly fades into the distance.
