The time has finally come, our little Automotive Revival project of a 1979 AMC Spirit AMX is going to get strapped down to the dyno rollers at CIA Performance for some testing! Our little AMC 304 V8 under the hood is past it's break in period and even survived the 1700 miles of Hot Rod Power Tour 2021 so now let's see with this little freshened up motor will make!
A little bit of backstory on the project and this motor specifically. The car in question is a 79 AMC AMX, one of the very few that came with both the 304 V8 and a 4 speed manual transmission. The engine has recently been through a "normal" rebuild with the factory original block being bored .060 over, the original cast iron heads being checked over, and compression raised to just a touch over 9 : 1. A new flat tappet camshaft was sourced as well, nothing too rowdy but a more modern grind, as well as an upgrade to the intake by going with an Edelbrock Performer AMC 4 barrel intake manifold and a 4 barrel vacuum secondary carb from Jegs to provide fueling and breathing.
Exhaust wise, it's essentially all factory. The original manifolds are bolted on, the original Y-Pipe is still there bringing both banks together into a single shot exhaust to the back through 2" pipe. In the middle is a Thrush muffler. Is it going to do wheel stands? No. Is it going to be the highest powered AMC 304 of all time? No. Does it make good America sounds and make the car fun and interesting to drive? You betcha!
This build we have done sort of what we would say is a "common man" or "normal rebuild" not going with anything expensive or exotic. There are no aluminum heads. There is no fancy fuel injection system with a large single plane intake manifold. There is no long tube header setup with fancy exhaust. There is no roller camshaft. None of that. Just a good 'ole fashioned budget friendly rebuild like most people would do.
With all that said, how does it stack up against the Powernation AMC 304 build? In the Powernation Javelin build we saw a much less budget friendly option for these old AMC V8 machines and have numbers to compare with. As you'll see in our video, there are certainly some benefits to going to some of the more modern pieces especially the Edelbrock port injection fuel injection system and intake manifold.
As we've said in many of our videos in the past we're willing to show you all The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and this video has a mixture of all of those. We've certainly got some challenges, and will even admit some mistakes that could/should have been addressed, but that's what it's all about putting it out there and being honest. We hope you enjoy this video update on our 79 AMC Spirit AMX project, there's more to come soon!
