Mulberry paper, known as Samarkand paper, is a historic Uzbek craft revived in Samarkand, made from mulberry bark using a manual, water-powered process involving soaking, boiling, pounding the fibers, pressing, and polishing, resulting in durable, silky paper prized for calligraphy, miniatures, and manuscript restoration, often sold as souvenirs.
Key aspects of Samarkand mulberry paper:
Origin:
The technique came to Central Asia via Chinese in 751 CE, making Samarkand a major paper center on the Silk Road.
Process:
Mulberry branches (about two years old) are used.
Bark is soaked, softened, and boiled to separate the bast fibers.
Fibers are pounded into pulp, mixed with water, and formed into sheets.
Sheets are pressed, dried, and polished with shells or stones for smoothness.
Characteristics:
It has a unique silky texture, durability, and often a natural yellowish tint, making it ideal for calligraphy and miniature painting.
Uses:
Used for art, restoration, calligraphy, and even souvenirs like purses and bags.
