Ellen Paonessa is an Art Therapist and Registered Psychotherapist in the Department of Supportive Care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.
As The Princess Margaret’s first and only Art Therapist, she specializes in supporting the emotional and psychosocial needs of individuals in palliative care, cancer treatment and those with unique needs.
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that allows patients to express and process challenging thoughts or feelings in a safe and supported environment.
Ellen is also a cancer survivor. While she was studying to be an Art Therapist at the University of Alberta, she was diagnosed with a Stage 4 brain tumour. She was treated at The Princess Margaret and has made a full recovery.
She says being a cancer survivor has allowed her to view the experience of the cancer journey through a different lens.
