Dr. Saatman: I’m Dr. Donna Saatman. I am an MD neurosurgeon and have been practicing in the Brandon area since 2004, initially in my own solo practice, and I joined the physicians of Florida Orthopaedic in 2014. I am originally from the state of New York and came to Florida for my residency training, which is training as a physician to learn a specific field, and mine was neurosurgery. The field of neurosurgery encompasses surgery for certain conditions of the brain and spine and the nerves that run through your extremities. The majority of patients actually can be treated successfully with physical therapy and medical management. Occasionally, patients that have signs related to stress on the spinal cord or nerves (01:00) may ultimately need surgeries such as a laminectomy procedure or a discectomy or, rare and occasional, a spinal fusion procedure. I really enjoy the patient interactions. Everyone has a different story and it’s very interesting to see how problems have affected their life, how they’ve tried to intervene on their own and how they interact with other medical care practitioners. Very commonly, patients will come having seen a multitude of doctors and, after a discussion with me, will thank me for spending the time to thoroughly listen to their own individual story and explain their condition and what the treatment options are. That patient interaction and education process is by far and away the most rewarding part of the whole interaction with your patient. Todd: My name is Todd Bishop. Basically, six months ago I was (02:00) bowling, of all sports, and woke up the next morning and could not move my neck. I was taking the strongest pain meds you could have and it wouldn’t touch the pain. I basically called Florida Orthopaedic and asked them about who was the best doctor to see for a neck problem, and they said Dr. Saatman. I told Dr. Saatman exactly which fingers; she knew exactly which vertebrae before she MRI’d it, and as soon as the MRI was done, I was scheduled for surgery. There was no waiting. As much pain I was in, the faster the better. The procedure was five and a half hours. I woke up after the surgery, went home the very next morning and was back to work within a week. I immediately got off the pain medication and I’m living a happy, healthy life right now. Dr. Saatman gave me my life back (03:00) and Florida Orthopaedic made it easy. Dr. Saatman: Being able to join a large group like this that has specialists that can take care of the billing, the contracts, your insurance plans and all of that, and free you up to, again, spend the time with the patients, which is where our training and expertise is, I found that move to be extremely rewarding. In my free time, what free time we get as physicians, I do enjoy working with my horses. My husband and I have two horses on our property. We’re fortunate enough to have a couple acres and be able to afford to have them on the property, but it further tunes my ability of observation and learning how to pick up on body language because these are four-legged creatures that experience pain, back pain, leg pain, and I think it’s a good complement to medicine. It keeps my skills of observation (04:00) attuned.
