The human body is designed to live in environments where relative humidity is within a specific range, between 40 and 60%. This ideal range is due to several different mechanisms:
the innate immune defences of the respiratory system function best only when the incoming air is not too dry, to the extent where it defeats the action of “mucociliary clearance”
many viruses have reduced infectivity at humidity values above 40%
the transmissibility in air of all pathogens depends on the ability to remain in suspension of the droplets these are attached to. When the air is very dry, these droplets shrink in volume, become extremely light and can stay in suspension almost indefinitely
some parts of our body, such as the eyes, skin and the upper respiratory system are particularly sensitive to dry air in the environment. Vice-versa, keeping an adequate range of relative humidity, specifically between 40 and 60%, improves the perception of comfort and reduces dust.
