Facilitating student led disclosure: A Subject Coordinator’s Experience and Practice
Australian universities continue to report increased enrolments from students with disability (SwD) (Department of Education, 2022) but these students continue to experience barriers to entering the labour market (QILT, 2024). They are also underrepresented in elective work-based WIL (Jackson, 2023).
Recent research (Eckstein, 2022) indicates that the way SwD think about their careers can be distorted by their lived experience and that career development learning in Australian universities does not address this issue. The research also identified that SwD do not feel able to share disability information with employers, even though they anticipate that doing so will make things difficult for them in the world of work. This issue represents a missed opportunity for universities to enhance SwD’s ability to manage their own careers and it also affects university industry partners and WIL staff.
In this critical conversation, a work-based learning (WBL) Subject Coordinator uses recent research (including Eckstein, 2022) to frame a case study that interrogates examples of the psychosocial issues that impact SwD’s WIL and work-based learning WBL preparation. The Subject Coordinator will share her practice, informed by recent research into facilitating student-led disclosure and her experience soliciting institutional support. The critical conversation is designed for range of WIL practitioners across institutions and industry. Participants will discuss ways of using these principles to support students’ authentic engagement with WIL and their WIL industry partners relevant to their institutional contexts.
