A gunman identified as Ndiaga Diagne, 53, opened fire outside Buford's Backyard Beer Garden on Austin's 6th Street just before 2:00 AM, killing two and wounding 14. Diagne circled the bar before firing from his SUV, then stepped out with a rifle, shooting at pedestrians nearby. Austin officers killed Diagne at the scene, though three victims remained critical, Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed.

FBI Special Agent Alex Doran declared the attack "potentially an act of terrorism", citing a "Property of Allah" sweatshirt and an Iranian flag shirt found on the suspect.

The shooting occurred just one day after the United States and Israel launched an attack on Iran that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei — raising immediate questions about a possible motive linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump had been briefed on the shooting.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a stern warning, vowing that Texas would aggressively respond to anyone attempting to use the Middle East conflict to threaten the state.
