In this episode of The Liturgy Desk, we explore a remarkable medieval Arabic manuscript whose colophon preserves the voice of Coptic Pope Gabriel III—writing while in exile at the Monastery of St. Antony.
The manuscript identifies its own model as having been written by Pope Gabriel III himself. In his own words, the Pope explains that an earlier Arabic translation of the biblical readings was inadequate, and that he personally re-translated the Holy Week lections with care and precision. He reflects on what it means to be a good translator of Scripture, cites respected translators before him, and urges readers not to “correct” the text out of unfamiliarity with proper Arabic usage.
This witness is especially significant because it preserves one of the earliest Arabic Holy Week Lectionaries in the Coptic tradition, shedding new light on:
The history of the Coptic Holy Week Lectionary
The emergence of Arabic as a liturgical language
The scholarly and pastoral role of Pope Gabriel III
Biblical translation in medieval Christian Egypt
