Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site. And in 1994 it was declared as one of the Seven New Natural Wonders of the Earth. Ha Long means descending dragon. There are almost 2000 islands of which only 40 are inhabited. Titop Island was named after a Russian astronaut, Gherman Titov. Sung Sot Cave on Bo Ho Island has the largest cave in Halong Bay, also known as Surprise Cave or Amazing Cave. Apparently the French discovered the cave in 1901. This cave is 10,000 square feet, and 30 meters high. From 520 to 470 million BC, Halong Bay was subject to intense tectonic plate movement, along with sever rainfall and flooding which caused the formation of underwater mountains. Millions of years later, Halong Bay began to experience a period of extreme heat and drought. The change in the weather patterns is what eventually contributed to the emergence of the thick limestone formations that we can still see today. The steady erosion of these sea mounds has eventually formed the Halong Bay caves.
