Karen Robinson has over 25 years of experience in human rights education, community and youth development, and community organising. She currently works at the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights. The RFK Center, founded by Robert Kennedy's family and friends to realise his dream of a more just and peaceful world, is one of the foremost international human rights organisations. Karen leads the human rights education project, Speak Truth to Power: a global initiative that uses the experiences of courageous human rights defenders from around the world to educate students and others about human rights and urge them to take action.
Speak Truth to Power highlights the inspiring work of diverse defenders, from Abubacar Sultan, from Mozambique, who works tirelessly to protect children's rights, to Jamie Nabozny, an American tackling bullying and Juliana Dogbadzi who bravely continues to speak out against slavery in Ghana. United by their activism and commitment to human rights, these defenders' stories inspire students to become personally involved in the protection of human rights. The Speak Truth to Power curriculum introduces general human rights issues through these stories and urges students to take action to become a defender. The project began as a book written by Kerry Kennedy and has been adapted into a dramatic production by Ariel Dorfman. The portraits of the human rights defenders by the late Pulitzer-Prize-winning photographer Eddie Adams featured in the book have been made into an exhibition that has toured over twenty cities in the United States and is now displayed on four continents. The Speak Truth To Power human rights education curriculum has been disseminated to hundreds of thousands of students in the U.S., Europe and Africa.
