Insect pollinators not only fill our environment with life, colour and beauty, these fascinating little creatures are also among the most important animals on earth. But why are pollinators so important, what threats do they face, and what can we do to help them? Find out in this short animation produced by the Channel Island Pollinator Project.
Video Transcript
Pollinators provide important ecosystem services.
We rely on insects for our survival. They may be small, but they do a big job. They carry pollen from the male to the female parts of flowers, enabling plants to produce fruits, seeds, and from them, new plants.
Without pollinators we could lose some of our favourite foods, such as apples, strawberries, chocolate, grapes, coffee, and even baked beans. Our world would loose four fifths of its wild plants and a third of all the food we eat.
Local pollinators are under threat. Our pollinators face threats such as loss of habitat due to change in land use, chemicals used in gardening and farming, as well as the presence of invasive non-native species.
So, what can you do to help us protect them?
Whether you have a large garden, a small back yard, or an empty windowsill, you can help by creating a habitat for them. You could grow pollinator friendly flowers in your flower boxes, plant pollinator-friendly trees, leave part of your garden to grow wild, and consider cutting your grass less often. Think carefully before using pesticides and other chemicals. You could even install bug hotels and bee boxes.
