Tulsa police are investigating a shooting that happened just after 6 p.m. near 63rd Street and South Peoria Avenue on Tuesday, Feb. 24, as residents in the area continue to press city leaders for a long-promised safety strategy that has not yet been released.
Officers said they received multiple calls reporting two groups exchanging gunfire. Investigators believe the victim, identified as 28-year-old Pedro Valdez, was caught in the crossfire. Police said Valdez told them he does not know how he was struck, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
The shooting comes months after District 2 Councilor Anthony Archie said an improvement strategy was in the works following a deadly shooting on Sept. 29 near 61st Street and Peoria Avenue.
At the time, Archie said, “This is a trying moment but 61st & Peoria’s best days are ahead. I’ve been working closely with community and city leaders to develop an improvement strategy that aims to lower crime, bring economic investment and strengthen community spirit. We will announce the strategy in the coming weeks.”
Months later, after additional reports of gun violence and after residents shared safety concerns about the area, Archie was asked again at 6:54 a.m. when the strategy would be released.
Archie did not do an interview but sent a statement saying:
I am saddened by these recent acts of violence in our community and along with our community partners want to address their root causes. For the last 18 months the planning office and I have worked with community partners to develop a comprehensive revitalization plan for the Riverwood neighborhood. That plan is forthcoming and will implement community recommendations on public safety. I want to commend our first responders for their service and encourage residents to report unsafe activity immediately.
When asked for a clearer timeline, noting that in September he said the plan would be announced “in the coming weeks”, Archie said the rollout date is forthcoming and that notification will be provided once it is finalized.
Police said the shooting near 63rd and Peoria remains under investigation.
