Stanford alum Ahmad Wani, MS ’15, civil and environmental engineering, explains how he’s using machine learning to make emergency first responders more efficient and effective.
“I learned that there were thousands of 911 calls right after the 2014 Napa earthquake. It took first responders several days to go to the last person. And then what the emergency departments learned is that the majority of 911 calls didn’t even come from Napa, because Napa’s phone networks were down. So I thought, wait a second, these people actually aren’t able to use their most critical resources to help those in the most need.”
While at Stanford, Wani combined a machine learning class with his earthquake engineering work to see if he could train a computer model to make accurate predictions about buildings or areas most susceptible to earthquake damage, based on historical building information. Doing this live and at scale would transform the way emergency operation centers are able to manage disaster relief efforts.
