Hello, it’s Charles from DrugTalk TV here and I’ve got a brand new video for you. This time the question posed to me is “What happens if I fail a mouth swab test when I am applying for a pre-employment test?”

Well, this is going to be a fairly short subject. There are many things that can happen if you fail a drug test , but specifically when it comes to a mouth swab (Saliva, or oral fluid) drug test , you are probably not going to be working in a regulated industry such as D.O.T. testing (which is urine testing only) such as truck drivers, bus drivers or pilots (etc), or for an industry such as Nursing or medical where you would be taking a Medical Professional panel . For either of those the tests are almost always going to be urine based testing.

Now in the case of mouth swab testing, it is usually done for such industries as retail, or an industry that is not quite a highest concern for making sure the person is not doing drugs (or are cheap and it is the cheapest type of drug testing – Charles).

Oral fluid testing usually detects a shorter window of use, and I’ve covered that in my initial episode, and because of that the chances of you being positive (failed drug test) are much lower. But, in case you do come up positive, what happens to your information?

The good thing to know about drug testing, and your personal information is that it is considered personal health information and as such is I believe covered by the HIPPA laws. So, if you apply for a drug test with for example a retailer and you do not pass, they cannot share this information with anyone else. This is unlike Life Insurance Testing where your results are shared with the MIB (Medical Information Bureau) where it resides forever and is shared with any life insurance company that pings the database.

Because of that, if you fail a drug test, no one is going to know about it except you and the HR department of the company you applied for. You are not probably going to be able to apply at that company again because your results reside in their system (likely linked to your social), but they are not going to share this with any other company in the market, not to mention no one will even know you applied at that company, let alone failed a drug test.

Rest assured, unless you are going to be doing something that involves a different type of drug testing, and I am going to cover that in future videos, when it comes to mouth swab drug testing most of the time you are going to be in an industry that is not regulated and you do not need to worry. If you fail a pre-employment drug test your information isn’t going anywhere except into the records and being filed at that company and you will not get the job.
