"Vom Tode”, from Beethoven’s rarely heard “Sechs Gellert-Lieder”, is a deeply personal and intense reflection on the end of life and the ‘memento mori’ phrase. We hear two voices in this short song: the voice of the mortal and that of the eternal presence of time. The stark and relentless piano part, reminiscent of a ticking clock or heartbeat, provides a subtle but firm reminder. Beth Taylor (mezzo-soprano) and Marcia Hadjimarkos (piano).

Meine Lebenszeit verstreicht,
Stündlich eil ich zu dem Grabe,
