About this webinar:
Sugarcane orange rust, caused by Puccinia kuehnii, is a disease in many sugarcane-producing regions worldwide. Developing resistant commercial varieties remains the most effective and sustainable strategy for its control. This presentation will share recent research conducted in Réunion, focusing on the impact of orange rust on yield traits and the genetic basis of resistance. Multi-environment field trials revealed both a significant yield impact in susceptible varieties and a strong genetic component of resistance. Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) identified six resistance QTLs, mainly originating from Saccharum spontaneum, providing valuable insights and practical tools to support the breeding of high-performing, rust-resistant sugarcane varieties.
