Raw footage, no commentary... captured at around 0300 AM. The only other sounds in the room are coming from the Simucube 2 Pro and the actual physical contact that I make with the steering wheel and pedals.
Within an environment of dead silence, the mechanical sound of each shift that comes from this budget H shifter is crisp and distinct. I would not go so far as to say it is "loud", but there was definitely no effort involved in reducing or dampening the "noise" element when whoever "SIMSONN" is, designed this. And yes, it will be very noticeable when used at night or around "sensitive" people.
Personally, I find the sounds quite reassuring, as the clicks and clunks are very good at communicating a successful engagement of "that" particular gear slot, even when wearing headphones.
You will also hear some squeaking from time to time. That is the top face plate which is made from a plastic/perspex-acrylic material. I have seen some "reviews" on YouTube regarding this shifter (or obvious clones, they are all using the exact same internals) talking about how strongly built this thing is. You can see in this video that I am shifting with ease and confidence. No angry or overly enthusiastic movements, yet you can still hear the occasional squeak the comes from movement/friction stress.... which means eventually this face plate will break.
100%, it will break at some point and it is the weak point in this product.
More specifically, the H pattern teeth will break... and there will be no way to find a replacement plate for it. I have looked, and they do not exist. This device was clearly designed to be disposed of when broken. The alternative is for someone to make a 3D scan of the plate and then have a custom 3D printed replacement on hand (preferably from ABS, though carbon fibre filament could be worth exploring). I do not have a 3D scanner (yet). I suspect this may be a worthwhile route because the mechanicals within this unit do actually feel like they will survive a lot of long term punishment.
As another note on functionality; I bought the 7+1, or 8 gear version with "A BUTTON."
That button is completely and utterly useless. I bought this thinking it would work as a Hi/Lo switch (like for full syncro truck transmissions)... it actually works to spike the USB port. Whether connected directly to your machine, or via a USB port, pressing the button actually spikes the power to the shifter turning it off while the button is depressed, and anything else that is connected to said hub gets spiked as well. Every other device connected to that hub resets, and re-powers back up. Also worth noting is that the shift positions are all flat in terms of slotting... so no pressing down and across to find Reverse. Reverse is whatever you assign as a slot (in this instance, 8th gear is the most appropriate). It is incredibly simple, and yet all the product description pages, either on Ebay, Amazon or AliExpress/Baba utterly fail to properly communicate what is important... usually because those sellers are faceless dropship accounts, and they are also usually selling scam/counterfeit products as part of their shop selection.
I have no regrets though. I bought this thinking it would be good enough to satisfy that occasional urge to work a proper manual shifter, but only for use when the novelty of H shifting hit me. But this was good enough that it has made me realise that paddle shifting is not the ultimate "quick shift" option. There is something very natural and appropriate when using a good H-shifter with older cars, or more specifically: vehicles with turning arcs greater than 320°. I had forgotten how good that could be thanks to the fairly weak and characterless nature of my old Logitech G25 shifter, which is 100% effective and functional, but fails to also be "satisfying."
When the face plate on mine does break, and if I have not yet found a way to easily source a custom replacement... AND if I have a decent amount of cash sitting around for yet another irresponsible impulse purchase, I will definitely have an ultra high end H-shifter in my sights like either a VNM, a Frex short shifter, or the particularly large (and stupidly expensive) unit from ProSim.
And for anyone especially curious about the in-game footage. All MOD content. Two custom Australian tracks (Lakeside and Willowbank/QLD Raceway) while the car is from the "F1 1986 Historical Edition" MOD pack/category: Marlboro McLaren International - #01 Alain Prost 0.44.1 (TAG Turbo).
