"Your disappointment is not my responsibility to carry."
"I'm done explaining myself."
"If you keep pushing, I'll create even more distance."
These are the phrases others will tell you to say to your mom when she won't respect your boundaries. Sure, they sound empowering, but they're keeping you stuck. If your goal is estrangement, say whatever you want. If you're trying to maintain even a small relationship with your mom, these phrases are doing the opposite. They create defensiveness and can start fights. They keep you in the same exhausting cycle of arguing and explaining and never being heard.
There are 3 lanes of healing a mother wound:
1. Estrangement (sometimes this is the only safe option)
2. Limited relationship with strong boundaries (you maintain connection without sacrificing yourself)
3. Reconnection with a mom who's willing to repair
Most boundary advice is written for lane 1. But if you're in lane 2 or hoping for lane 3, you need completely different phrasing.
In this video, I'm showing you what to say instead. I am showing you language that centers your emotions and needs without attacking her. Language that makes it harder for her to feel defensive. I'm not promising your mom will suddenly change, but I am promising these phrases give you a better shot than "I'm not a child anymore and you don't get to control me with guilt."
