In 2023, record-breaking snow buried the Pacific Crest Trail. One man kept walking — 2,655 miles from Mexico to Canada, through storms, solitude, and silence.
About the Series
Be the Wind is an original documentary series by WindQuester, capturing authentic Canadian outdoor stories of endurance, simplicity, and connection with nature.
Through this ongoing project, we explore the quiet strength of those who move through the wild with lightness and purpose — from hikers and canoeists to climbers and explorers who live close to the elements.
Episode 1 — Riley Riffel: Snowbound
In 2023, Canadian hiker Riley Riffel set out to complete the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) — a 2,655-mile footpath stretching from Mexico to Canada.
That year became the biggest snow year since the 1950s: California’s snowpack reached 593%% of average, with the southern Sierra buried at 300%.
While many hikers turned back, Riley kept moving north — through deep snowfields, flooded valleys, and weeks of isolation — documenting his thoughts, fears, and quiet revelations along the way.
His journey became a story of resilience and stillness — a reminder of what it means to Be the Wind.

Riley’s reflections on his thru-hike are now collected in his book Snowbound, available on Amazon: https://a.co/d/5LqQJ7O
