In the mid-1980s, Oscar Mayer, the company that makes Lunchables, was in trouble. People were losing interest in their core business - processed meat products. That’s when a small group of product developers at Oscar Mayer came up with a clever way to sell all of that unwanted bologna. Lunchables.
Initially, Oscar Mayer launched the product by targeting working moms and dads, too busy to fix themselves a proper meal. But market research quickly revealed an entirely different demographic to target. Kids!
But even though first year sales were $218 million, Lunchables wasn't profitable.
That's when Philip Morris comes into the story...
As the world's largest tobacco company you might not realize that they also own Kraft Foods, the parent company of Oscar Mayer.
Once they took over Oscar Mayer, they invested heavily in the production of plastic trays in an attempt to make Lunchables more cost-effective. It didn’t happen overnight, but the investment soon paid off. Three years after Philip Morris got involved, Lunchables finally broke even. A year later, it earned $8 million. Its sales have been strong ever since.
But not everyone was happy about the success of Lunchables. Over the years, parents and doctors alike have tried to raise awareness about their lack of nutrition.
Are Lunchables healthy? Well, not really. But that's not for a lack of trying. From the beginning, Philip Morris, has tried again and again fto introduce healthier foods into the Lunchables lineup, only to be met with failure. And for mainly one reason – people don’t want to buy healthier options.
So what's the future of Lunchables?
There’s no question that these convenient little lunches are still as popular as ever. Demand is on the rise for Kraft foods across the board, and in 2021 Lunchables experienced double-digit growth for the first time in five years.
In 2025, Lunchables will have been around for 40 years. That’s a long time for something that you could throw together yourself in just a couple of minutes of rummaging through the pantry, but it's testament to the fact that people still love the Lunchables brand and their products, and that's unlikely to change any time soon!
