DOOKOOM have just released the first video single from their new album ‘RIFFAK’. The track is called ‘Gangstaz’, but it’s probably not what you would expect from South Africa’s most shocking and controversial band. Directed and filmed by Johannesburg-based, ‘Band A Part’, the track opens by claiming that ‘South Africans are gangstaz’, but DOOKOOM have flipped the meaning of ‘gangstaz’. By focusing the visuals on everyday South Africans doing their best to survive, the narrative is not about crime, corruption and violence (which are all too often associated with South Africa), but a more positive and uplifting concept - this is about people doing their best to thrive in the face of adversity.

The lyrics are still what you expect from DOOKOOM; hard-hitting, and with a sense of menacing anger at the injustices of the past. But the visuals of people going about their lives focuses the viewer’s attention on the present - and what people are doing to overcome their circumstances. By doing so DOOKOOM have created an anthem for all the people of South Africa.
