New Haven, Connecticut is the third-largest city in Connecticut, and one of its most historically and culturally rich. Situated along the state's southern coast, New Haven is home to the world-renowned Yale University campus, a prestigious Ivy League school. However, what New Haven is best known for these days is its thriving pizza scene, characterized by the distinctive New Haven-style pizza, locally referred to as “apizza” (pronounced “ah-BEETS”).

New Haven-style pizza is characterized by its uneven shape, thin crust, heavy char, savory tomato sauce, and chewiness, often with limited cheese. Local pizzeria staples like Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, Sally’s Apizza, and Modern Apizza are considered some of the best pizzerias in the nation, churning out delicious pies each and every day. These stores, and others like them, have been operating for several decades, and are now seen as cultural landmarks in their own right, drawing thousands of hungry tourists and accumulating large crowds.

As an avid enjoyer of New Haven-style pizza myself, I wanted to broaden my horizons and try out more of the city’s tasty pizza offerings (I had only ever tried Frank Pepe and Sally’s before this video). Joined by my friend Jesse, we spent the day in New Haven and toured several of its most iconic and delicious pizzerias, even ending up in nearby West Haven by the end of the trip. After sampling all these tasty cheese pizzas, we ranked them, from least favorite to favorite. Where does your favorite apizza land on the list? Watch the video to find out now!
