•Publishing in a Twelfth-Century Syriac Monastery: Manuscript Production, Authority, and Scribal Practice at the Monastery of Mary Magdalene in Jerusalem•
The Monastery of Mary Magdalene and Simon the Pharisee in Jerusalem enjoyed a period of particular flourishing in the twelfth century, when, through ecclesiastical and possibly royal patronage, the monastery was revived both spiritually and materially. Part of this revival involved the production of several Syriac manuscripts for use within the monastic community: manuscripts were copied, repaired, and collected at the monastery during this period.
This paper examines manuscript production at the monastery during this period, with particular attention to the paratextual material found in these manuscripts, and advances two central claims. First, ecclesiastical oversight in manuscript production can be understood as a form of publishing (or licensing) that materially attested to a text’s correctness and communal acceptability long after its original composition. Second, the paratextual strategies employed in this publishing process reveal that manuscripts were conceived not simply as copies of texts, but as authorised and materially situated books.
