1998 brings us some of the most iconic sets and, if my opinion matters, brings us into a new age of Magic the Gathering. The first set of the year, Stronghold, continues the Tempest Block and has a prerelease stamp that includes something we have come to expect: a date showing off the date of the prerelease! Exodus rounds out the block and is the first set to change the set symbol based on the rarity of the card, ending a notion to obfuscate which cards were rare that was hard to maintain in the days of the internet. Portal gets a sequel, subtitled "Second Age", and course corrects from many issues players took with the original release. In August, we got Unglued, the first "Un-" set, and it received the iconic Silver Borders, letting us know it isn't legal in competitive formats. The final expansion release of the year is the infamous Urza's Saga, home of many cards that are still widly played today due to their relative power level. This brought us Serra's Sanctum, Gaea's Cradle, and Tolarian Academy. In lieu of a core set, we receive Anthologies, a reprint box set made to celebrate the 5 year anniversary of the game.
