Restaurants Can't Lower Prices Anymore... But They're Empty

Walk into a restaurant on a Friday night and something feels wrong: half the tables are empty, but your check is the highest it has ever been. Menu prices are up more than 30 percent since 2019, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and yet foot traffic has been shrinking for years. That combination breaks the basic rule of business. When customers stop showing up, prices are supposed to fall. In restaurants, the opposite is happening. This video explains exactly why.
Using traffic data from Black Box Intelligence, Revenue Management Solutions, and Placer.ai against the BLS menu-price index, we break down the four costs that locked in and will not fall: labor (California pushed fast-food pay to 20 dollars an hour), wholesale food (up roughly a quarter since 2020), multi-year commercial rent, and the 2 to 3 percent card fee on every swipe. With average restaurant margins of just 3 to 5 percent, a real price cut would wipe out the entire profit. So the room empties, prices climb, and the hikes hide inside shrinkflation, junk service fees, and creeping tip screens.
Then the important part: what you can actually do about it. Read the bottom of the bill before you tip, tip on the pre-tax total, pull the discounts out of the loyalty apps, and learn to spot the shrink. You cannot force a restaurant to lower its prices, but you can take back the one number you decide. Subscribe to Curious Money, where we show you exactly how the machine takes your money, with the real numbers.
