Does copper, zinc, nickel or tin plating improve the performance of shotgun pellets? Does it improve corrosion resistance? I did a rust test with four different steel loads to find out for sure. I also discussed if plating improves pattern efficient, and I showed test date to see if plating improves ballistics gel penetration. Plated shot is used in ammunition for duck hunting, turkey hunting, pheasant hunting, and more.

Why is TSS, lead, bismuth, and steel shot plated? Plating shotgun pellets potentially improves performance in three main areas due it increased lubricity which lowers the coefficient of friction.
1. Plated shot slides through the choke more smoothly – possibly improving the pattern density.
2. The plated pellets potentially slide through the air more smoothly retaining more velocity and slide through the birds more smoothly – all resulting in more penetration at range.
3. Plating potentially protects pellets from corrosion – Making ammo less susceptible to moisture.
The shells that I have done the most pattern and ballistics gel testing with are BOSS Copper Plated Wolfram TSS, BOSS Copper Plated Bismuth, Kent Fasteel (Zinc Plated Steel), and Winchester Longbeard XR (Copper Plater Lead). BOSS, Winchester, and APEX have given me ammo in the past, including some of the ammo used to generate data presented in this video.
