The Madras High Court has set aside the Tamil Nadu government's decision to provide government jobs to the families of those who died in the Karur crowd, dealing a significant setback to Chief Minister Vijay's administration. The court ruled that public employment cannot be granted as compensation and must be filled only through constitutional procedures that ensure equal opportunity for all eligible candidates.

The appointments were announced earlier this month after the Chief Minister handed over job orders to 31 members of the victims' families. The government described the move as a humanitarian measure following the tragic crowd in Karur last year, which claimed 41 lives during a political gathering.

However, the High Court observed that while the government has the authority to provide financial assistance or other forms of relief, offering government jobs in such cases violates Articles 14 and 16 of the Constitution. The judges said public employment is a public trust and cannot be distributed as compensation, warning that such decisions could create a precedent leading to similar demands after future accidents and disasters.

The court also noted that compassionate appointments are meant only for the immediate family members of government employees who die while in service and cannot be extended to unrelated situations.

The Tamil Nadu government has challenged the High Court's order before the Supreme Court, arguing that the appointments were made as an exceptional humanitarian gesture for families that suffered immense loss.

The verdict is expected to influence how governments across India frame relief measures after public tragedies, reinforcing that government jobs must be awarded only through legally prescribed recruitment processes.
