5 tips for traveling with someone with Autism😇

Remember vacations are traditionally a break in routine, which can be so hard for many kids with autism, but it didn't realize not make a vacation impossible
The benefits can be worth the few bumps you may face

1 Choose a destination with your child's interests and limits in mind. Consider which activities your child enjoys and what kinds of settings reduce anxious reactions. Try and include them in the planning process. Adapt excursions to meet interests, attention span and sensory processing capabilities as much as possible

2 prepare for travel with role playing and visual supports. Role playing before the trip gives a child on the spectrum time to process what they may expect while on vacation. A picture schedule can also be valuable.

3 Anticipate your child's needs. Think over all stops and excursions to pin point what may cause a meltdown. This allows you to pinpoint potential triggers. Then factor in breaks and downtime as needed. Never feel bad about asking for accommodations

4 Pack the right gear. Make sure your child has access to his or her preferred coping mechanisms. Ideas include but are not limited to: noise cancelling headphones, a tablet, fidgets, sunglasses, weighted blanket and other soothers. Think preferred snacks, books, DVDs, art supplies, assistance communication tools and favorite loves.

5 Safety while traveling. A medical alert bracelet or autism necklace makes an easy way to share your child's diagnosis in case of emergency. Another idea is a label somewhere on them with all important info and your contact info. Take a picture of them each day in what they are wearing just in case
