1.1%. That is South Africa’s economic growth figure for 2025, and while it is the strongest annual result in three years, it still leaves a bigger question hanging over the country: why does growth still feel so weak?
In this episode of Number of the Day, Gareth Edwards and Francis Herd unpack what the latest GDP figure really tells us. On the surface, 1.1% sounds like progress. It is higher than 2024’s growth rate and it confirms that the economy kept expanding into the final quarter of the year. But once the number is placed against unemployment, stalled structural reform and the broader lived reality of South Africans, the mood changes fast.
The conversation explores the gap between a better headline and a better economy. The hosts weigh the glass-half-full case against the harder truth that 1.1% growth still does very little to meaningfully change the structure of the economy or create jobs at the scale the country needs.
They also dig into the deeper reasons South Africa remains stuck in low-growth territory, from long-term stagnation in key sectors to the structural weaknesses that continue to drag momentum down.
1.1%. A better number, yes. But still a country treading water. #eNCA
