In recent years India has seen the rise of so-called 'cow vigilantism' - attacks on religious minorities, often Muslim, aimed at protecting cows, which Hindus consider sacred. Prime Minister Modi has been accused of not doing enough to prevent hate crimes against India's minority populations.

Newsnight's James Clayton has been to Rajasthan to investigate the death of farmer Rakbar Khan, killed in July 2018.
