The world's first nuclear explosion occurred in an area known as Jornada del Muerto, about 210 miles south of Los Alamos, New Mexico. This test, code-named "Trinity," took place on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project, marking the beginning of the atomic age. The location, a desert in southern New Mexico, was chosen for its remoteness to minimize the impact on populated areas.
The explosion was a plutonium-based implosion bomb and produced an intense blast equivalent to about 20,000 tons of TNT. Scientists and military personnel observed the test from a safe distance, but the power of the detonation exceeded even their expectations, lighting up the sky and creating a massive mushroom cloud. This historic event paved the way for the development of atomic weapons and had profound implications for science, warfare, and international relations.
