Not all commercial vehicles require a CDL, but knowing the difference can keep you from running into trouble with DOT. A CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) is required when you're operating a Class A, B, or specific Class C vehicle that meets weight and endorsement requirements.
🚛 CDL Drivers: Behind the wheel of big rigs, box trucks, buses, and hazmat vehicles—anything requiring more training and skill to handle. If it’s over 26,000 lbs or towing a trailer over 10,000 lbs, you need a CDL.
🚐 Non-CDL Drivers: Still commercial, but operating smaller trucks, vans, or vehicles under 26,000 lbs that don’t require extra endorsements. Think delivery trucks, smaller straight trucks, and local business vehicles.
Understanding the difference matters—especially when it comes to DOT regulations, insurance, and job opportunities. Are you running the right license for the job?
