1) Tenses Show Time + Focus
Tenses don’t only show when something happens. They also show what you want to emphasize.
Example:
✅ I finished the report.➡️ Focus = completed result
✅ I was finishing the report.➡️ Focus = action in progress / background
2) Past Simple Vs Past Perfect (Very Important!)
Past Simple = one past time
✅ I finished the report when you called.➡️ The two actions are close together.
Past Perfect = “earlier past” (past before past)
✅ I had finished the report when you called.➡️ Finish happened before the call.
📌 Tip: Past perfect is used when the order is not clear OR you want to stress “already finished”.
3) “When” Vs “While” Can Change The Tense Choice
When = often a short action
✅ I was studying when you called.
While = longer background action
✅ While I was studying, you called.
So “when” often goes with:
Past Simple (called)
Past Continuous (was studying)
4) Some Tenses Are Chosen Because Of Connection To Now
Present Perfect = past + connection to now
✅ I have finished the report.➡️ It is finished now (important result now)
Past Simple = finished in the past (time is finished)
✅ I finished the report yesterday.➡️ Finished and time is over.
📌 Common mistake:❌ I have finished the report yesterday.✅ I finished the report yesterday.
5) Continuous Tenses Show Temporary / Unfinished / In Progress
✅ I am studying English these days.➡️ Temporary period
✅ I am studying now. ✅ He is working this week.
Keywords: now, at the moment, these days, today
✅ I was working when you called.➡️ Action in progress in the past
✅ I was cooking when you called.✅ They were sleeping at 10 pm.
Use: background action + interruption➡️ was cooking (long) + called (short)
6) Simple Tenses Show Facts, Habits, Routines
Form: V1 / V1+s✅ I live in Yangon.✅ She studies English every day.
✅ I study English every day.➡️ Habit
✅ Water boils at 100°C.➡️ Fact
Keywords: always, usually, every day, often, never
7) Future Is Not Only “Will”
English uses many ways to talk about the future:
✅ will → prediction / decision nowI’ll help you.
I think it will rain.
✅ be going to → plan / evidenceI’m going to study tonight.
Look! It’s going to fall.
✅ Present Continuous → fixed arrangementI’m meeting my friend tomorrow.
✅ Present Simple → timetableThe train leaves at 6.
8) Context Matters More Than “Rules”
Sometimes more than one tense is possible, but the meaning changes slightly.
Example:✅ I lived in Yangon. (past, finished time)✅ I have lived in Yangon. (still true OR life experience)
9) Time Expressions Help You Choose The Tense Fast
Past Simple words:
yesterday, last week, in 2019, ago✅ I visited Mandalay last year.
Present Perfect words:
ever, never, already, yet, just, recently, so far✅ I have just finished my homework.
10) Learn Tenses In “Pairs” (Best Method!)
Instead of memorizing 12 tenses alone, compare common pairs:
✅ Past Simple ↔ Present Perfect✅ Past Simple ↔ Past Continuous✅ Past Simple ↔ Past Perfect✅ Present Simple ↔ Present Continuous✅ Will ↔ Going to
This makes your speaking and writing much faster.
⭐ Super Fast Choosing Guide
If the time is finished → Past Simple
✅ yesterday / last week / in 2021
If it is connected to now → Present Perfect
✅ just / already / yet / so far
If one past action happened before another → Past Perfect
✅ had finished before called
If action was in progress → Continuous
✅ was studying / am studying
