No paint booth? No problem. In Episode 6, we start the covering process using the Oratex fabric system—the "paint-less" way to finish an airplane.
It’s time to move from the "skeleton" to the finished skin. Today we’re diving into the world of Oratex, a pre-finished, heat-shrinkable fabric that is changing the game for experimental aircraft builders. Unlike traditional "dope and fabric" methods, Oratex doesn't require toxic chemicals, sanding, or a paint booth.
I’ll show you the entire process: from prepping the airframe and applying the heat-activated adhesive to the satisfying moment we shrink the fabric to drum-tight perfection. We’ll discuss why I chose Oratex, the weight savings involved, and the logistical nightmare that came with it. I will answer the real question - “Would I put Oratex on an airplane again?”
Building a Kitfox has been a dream of mine, seeing the wings finally take their final color is a massive milestone. Whether you're a fellow builder or just curious about how modern kit planes are made, thanks for joining me on this journey!
ABOUT THE CHANNEL: On this channel, I’m documenting the step-by-step journey of building a Kitfox experimental aircraft. My goal is to share the meticulous detail, the technical challenges, and the pure joy of homebuilt aviation. From the first wooden rib to the final wiring harness, come along as the dream takes flight.
