This short documentary shows how Bangladesh is tackling antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by changing how one important antimicrobial, ciprofloxacin, is used in poultry. Kurban Ali, a poultry farmer in Rajshahi, stopped using ciprofloxacin as a preventive measure after FAO-supported training and now keeps chickens healthy through improved hygiene and biosecurity.
The video explains how heavy ciprofloxacin use in poultry can contaminate the environment and increase resistance in bacteria such as E. coli, which can cause urinary tract infections (UTIs) in people, often in women. Ciprofloxacin resistance in UTI cases has been reported at over 80 percent (Afroz et al., 2025). It also highlights oversight through the Bangladesh AMR Response Alliance (BARA) district veterinarians and prescription monitoring using the Rx Vision app.
Bangladesh reports a 50 percent nationwide reduction in ciprofloxacin use in poultry in three years, with early signs of falling resistance in poultry bacteria, contributing to a One Health response to AMR.
Produced in collaboration with the Department of Livestock Services, Government of Bangladesh, with financial support from the Fleming Fund.
