STORYLINE:
Despite an announcement of a ceasefire, Macedonian government troops continue to battle with separatist rebels around Tetovo, Macedonia's second largest city, on Thursday.
The flare-up came after ethnic-Albanian rebels were alleged to have launched an attack on a Slavic neighbourhood of the city.
Shelling, as well as heavy machine-gun and sniper fire shook the outskirts of Tetovo, near the city's sports stadium.
With only hours to go before the newly agreed ceasefire is due to be implemented, medical officials reported six people wounded by shrapnel and bullets, some seriously.
There was also damage to property after mortar rounds landed in and around residential area.
Government officials, who asked not to be identified, said they expected such outbreaks of shooting to continue until the cease-fire came into force just after 2200 GMT.
A spokesman for the the US State Department has welcomed the announcement of a ceasefire.
NATO troops may soon be introduced to Macedonia to police it.
