The Belfast Coffee is a delicious cocktail, perfect for promoting the love of poitín! What is poitín? The first records of poitín date back to the 1st century AD in Ireland and it pre-dates whiskey!
Poitín Pronounced Poit-chen, is a traditional Irish distilled beverage. Bar 1661 in Dublin, takes its name from the year that this Irish spirit became illegal. Poitín remained a clandestine art and pleasure for over four centuries, giving it the honour of being known as Ireland’s own “Moonshine” until it was legalized it in 1997. Bar 1661 is dedicated to the revival of poitín; in fact, the man behind the bar, Dave Mulligan, is the founder of modern poitín brand called Bán, although you’ll find no shortage of various brands and bottles of poitín on the bar at Bar 1661.
This is a lively, inviting cocktail bar with a nod to the past and a comfortable, modern flair.
