Описание: Who are the Molokans? The Russian Religious Christian Sect exiled to Azerbaijan from Central European Russia in the 1800’s. This group of people don’t have photos in their homes, don’t watch TV, don’t drink alcohol or eat pork. They set up home in the village of Ivanovka in the centre of Azerbaijan. A place where they were free to practice their own religion and live in peace.
These ethnic Russians were banished here during the Russian Empire period by Tsar Katherine the great for their different religious beliefs and in the hope to cause them issues from the local Azeri muslim population. However, this wasn’t the case and the Russian population were welcomed in to Azerbaijan and have stayed here ever since, throughout both the Soviet Union period and the period of modern Azerbaijan.
Nowadays, there are generations of Molokans who speak Russian, are ethnically Russian but have no association with the modern country. We travelled to Ivanovka to explore and fond out more about this unique Christian sect, their traditions and how they live in 2022 & modern Azerbaijan more generally 🇦🇿🇷🇺
