Throwing is a plyometric action and involves the fastest movement in sports with internal rotation angular velocities up to 7000 degrees per second (Pappas et al., 1985). In order for arm action to lead to the highest possible velocity, throwers must be elite at storing and releasing elastic energy in the upper body.
The stretch shortening cycle (SSC) allows elastic energy to be stored and utilized to enhance movement. Essentially, a rapid stretch occurs, muscle spindles sense both magnitude and velocity of a stretch and they send a signal for a muscle to contract faster and more forcefully than it would volitionally.
Plyometrics are very common for the lower body, but underutilized for the upper body.
In this video we dive into how the SSC is relevant to throwing velocity, how we utilize upper body plyometrics, and how training can make meaningful improvements.
