Along the way, we pause at the A137 level crossing for a front-seat view of three electric trains passing in quick succession—a spontaneous highlight of the drive. While the real-time wait lasted five minutes, we were lucky to be first at the barrier (other drivers diverted under the bridge), giving us a perfect vantage point. For viewer comfort, the video condenses this moment to just 40 seconds of train action.

*Hopping Bridge, Mistley*
A Grade II listed structure designed by Robert Adam in the late 1700s for Richard Rigby. Only the south face remains, with elegant brickwork and stone detailing. It once formed part of Rigby’s vision for Mistley as a spa town. The bridge sits on *The Walls*, a riverside road—not actual walls!—which offers tranquil views across the River Stour.

*Mistley & Manningtree*
Mistley is steeped in Georgian charm and maritime history. It was once a thriving port and spa experiment, with Mistley Towers and the Swan Fountain as architectural remnants. Manningtree, often cited as England’s smallest town by area, has deep wool trade roots and a darker legacy as the home of Matthew Hopkins, the Witchfinder General. The town’s Georgian façades hide older timber-framed buildings, and the River Stour here becomes tidal, forming a natural boundary between Essex and Suffolk.

*River Stour*
Flowing 47 miles from Cambridgeshire to Harwich, the Stour has inspired artists like Constable and Gainsborough. It was once a vital navigation route and remains a designated National Landscape (formerly AONB). Its tidal stretch begins near Manningtree, joining the Orwell at Shotley Point.

*Orwell Bridge & River Orwell*
The Orwell Bridge, completed in 1982, spans 1,287 metres and was once the UK’s longest pre-stressed concrete span. It carries the A14 over the River Orwell, which itself is only 11 miles long but rich in history—from Viking invasions to medieval trade. The river was named by George Orwell (Eric Blair) as his literary pseudonym, inspired by its serene beauty. The scenic viewpoint beneath the bridge offers sweeping views of the estuary and passing ships.

Brantham, once home to BX Plastics, has Saxon roots and connections to John Constable. Stutton, with its Tudor hall and links to Alton Water, lies just inland from the Orwell and offers quiet countryside charm. Holbrook is home to the Royal Hospital School and sits near the River Stour’s southern edge.
