A compact analytical formula relating shear stresses to Torque can be given for a thin walled hollow member that is prismatic, but of arbitrary cross section. The shear flow on a cross section perpendicular to the axis remains constant even with the thickness along the cross section changing. The reason for shear flow remaining constant is discussed and the formula relating stresses to Torque is derived.
Cross sections perpendicular to the axis in solid non-circular members such as a rectangle and a square get warped when such members are subjected to Torque. Plane sections do not remain plane. Maximum shear stresses and angle of rotation can be given using coefficients, obtained using theory of elasticity, which depend on the ratio of sides. The membrane analogy is discussed.
