World War II officially ended in 1945.
For Japanese officer Hiroo Onoda, it lasted nearly 30 years longer.
Deployed to Lubang Island in the Philippines in 1944, Onoda was ordered never to surrender unless formally relieved by his commanding officer. When Japan surrendered, he believed it was enemy deception and continued guerrilla warfare alone in the jungle for decades.
This documentary explores how and why Onoda kept fighting, what he did during those years, and how his war finally ended in 1974, when his original commander personally ordered him to stand down.
