Raised on Motown, gospel, jazz and rock, John “Jammin’” Collins began flexing his musical knowledge behind the decks in the mid-‘80s at Detroit club Cheeks, alongside Jeff Mills, before being hired in the early ’90s as a mix show DJ at legendary local radio stations WJLB FM 98 and WDRQ 93.1. In addition to his veteran turntable skills, this linchpin of Detroit’s techno underground has reported on dance music for Billboard; held celebrated residencies in his hometown and abroad; and remains a producer, booking agent and manager of iconic techno disruptors Underground Resistance. He also runs the crew’s operational arm Submerge, and conducts tours of Exhibit 3000, the only techno museum in the country. On his monthly two-hour show, broadcast live from our studio in downtown Detroit, John Collins takes listeners on a journey through slamming house and techno, velvety R&B, disco deep cuts and more — he spins vinyl selections from his collection during the first hour, and gets into a heated mix for the second.
