This is an example of optimal control theory applied to lap time simulation of race cars. Given a six degree of freedom vehicle model, the optimal throttle, brake, and steer inputs that minimize the lap time are found. Additionally, there is active control over the rear wing flap, similarly to the DRS in Formula 1.
The animation shows the resulting optimal "racing line", as well as the controls and key vehicle states (velocity, acceleration, power/traction limits).
This method can easily be applied to various racetracks, and vehicle parameters can be varied or optimized in conjunction with the controls.
