Tony Khan is in desperation mode. After another year of parse ratings and attendance, AEW is staring down a big barrell of uncertainty in the looming Netflix Era for now. A panicked Tony Twitter Fingers has now rallied the Internet to shower him with fake wrestling awards that I guess he's trying to use to gaslight executives into thinking AEW had a great year. Tony Khan is like if Trump was President of the IWC. No, not Donald, Tony Khan is like if Baron Trump was President of the IWC.

If you like numbers, AEW had a very bad year. So bad, in fact, Tony tried to lie about the attendance for his biggest show and even the Mavericky Texas Government was like nah, homie. Y'all gotta take this L.

AEW's biggest show of the year featured what was supposed to be the passing of the torch from superheel Jon Moxley to Great White Hope Hangman Adam Page. I can't say enoguh good things about this particular moment, and what I thought it was going to mean for AEW. But, by the end of the year, Hangman dropped the belt faster than the drop in AEW's business. If you're reading this right now, we're already in the Hangman Trios Era.

What? HOW?!

This is NOT how AEW drew it up.

A lot has been made about Jey Uso being demoted to the tag team division—you know? That tag division that headlined WrestleMania with those same Usos? But this is worse. Hangman's downfall is like if Cody was demoted to the Trios division. Adam Page continues to hang around the main event scene like a cockroach, but I don't think he's getting that belt back any time soon.

So what went wrong? How did AEW take its biggest storyline of the year and fumble the coronation? And what does Hangman's latest setback say about Tony Khan as a booker?

As a Day 1 AEW talent, Hangman Adam Page was the least-known wrestler of the Elite when All Elite Wrestling was formed. Cody Rhodes was a second-generation ex-WWE talent, and son of one of the most famous wrestlers to ever live. The Young Bucks were King of the Indies, taking the scenic route around WWE to build an independent wrestling empire. Kenny Omega was voted Dave Meltzer's most fetishized wrestler at the time, an honor that has since been passed from Will Ospreay to that sweaty muppet Kyle Fletcher. But despite not having anywhere near these accolades at the time, Hangman Page was a promising prospect after getting over in New Japan Pro Wrestling by way of Being the Elite.

Page rode that momentum to AEW, where he quickly found his way as a fun-loving cowboy who loved to drink. Before the Pandemic gave way to social distancing, AEW's most popular segments featured Hangman drinking beer with fans. As a progressive, millennial cowboy who openly spoke about his anxiety issues, Adam Page was a three-dimensional wrestling character and a man of the people. Most importantly, none of it felt forced. He was the perfect modern-day wrestler for a new-age company like AEW.
