But addiction science reveals something far more universal: the hidden relationship between discomfort in our being and the excess of our doing — and how that relationship shapes everyone’s ability to live a fulfilled life.
In this video, I break down a practical framework we use at ENTRE to understand fulfillment through the lens of addiction science — including:
Why fulfillment is a state of being, not an achievement you “do”
The two angles we study fulfillment from: teleology (design → purpose) and etiology (origins → meaning)
The top factors of human fulfillment (what the research consistently points to)
The Doing Cascade: support life → enrich life → escape life → harm life
Why “addiction” is often a misleading, overly binary label
The real definition that matters: any recurring behavior/substance used to alter mood and avoid feeling

Take 30 minutes and map your “doings” across these categories:
Work
Acquisition / shopping
Relationships
Substances (anything you consume)
Activities (everything else)
Then ask:
1. Is this supporting or enriching my life?
2. Or is it escaping or harming my life?
When you pull your doing back out of escape/harm, discomfort rises — and that’s the point. That discomfort is information. It’s the gateway to healing, alignment, and real fulfillment.
