In 1966, An SR-71 Pilot Ejected At Mach 3 From His Jet.
On January 26th, 1966, an SR-71 Blackbird crew wore their pressure suits, went airborne, and reached 78,000 feet to test the aircraft. The jet was flying at Mach 3.18 at that altitude when, all of a sudden, its right engine failed. The sudden loss of the right engine created a serious problem. The jet started to get out of control. The crew decided to slow down the jet, but the SR-71 started disintegrating. During this, the pilot somehow ejected from the Blackbird at Mach 3 at 78,000 feet. He was unconscious as he fell from near space, and soon he woke up mid-air. His pressure suit's visor was covered with ice, and he landed in New Mexico and was soon rescued by the landowner.
