The ocean is a vast, dynamic environment. Being an intelligent, social animal that lives in groups is beneficial in ecosystems like these as they are able to communicate about food resources, obstacles, and disease.
Cooperative foraging and herding of prey schools is another advantage to living in groups and may be one reason dolphins form long-term bonds.

When a group of fish are found, the dolphins will encircle the mass, and with the help of their tail and fins, force the school to clump closer and closer together. This technique makes it easier for the dolphin to swim in and grab a meal!
