sunday, May 18, 2025, at approximately 2:28 PM, I, TFC Antonio May, was traveling eastbound on Interstate 40 in the left lane. I observed a red passenger car with Nevada license plate 2D5W70 also traveling eastbound in the right lane. I noticed the vehicle was traveling very slow, around 58 mph in a 75-mph zone. Along with driving more than 15 mph under the posted speed limit, I observed the passenger car weaving within its lane. I then observed the right side of the red passenger car cross the fog line of the right shoulder. I initiated a traffic stop at the 75-mile marker by activating my emergency lights. I conducted a passenger-side approach and identified myself to the driver, explaining the reason for the stop. While speaking with the driver—later identified as Michael Powell—I smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. While collecting Mr. Powell’s driver’s license and registration, his hands were shaking nonstop, and I could hear him stuttering throughout our conversation. I asked the front-seat passenger, later identified as Jaymani Gorman, and the rear passenger, later identified as Xavier Jones, for identification. Both individuals stated they did not have any identification on them. I instructed Mr. Powell to exit the vehicle. While out of the vehicle, I asked Mr. Powell to stand beside my patrol unit. When I
said this, Mr. Powell placed his hands on my patrol car and assumed a position like I was going to pat him down or handcuff him which is not what I asked him to do. I also noticed Mr. Powell was wearing a black T-shirt with the saying “RETIRED DRUG DEALER”. During our conversation, I asked Mr. Powell where they were coming from. He stated they were traveling from
California to South Carolina to attend a funeral, with a planned stop in Atlanta. When asked who the vehicle belonged to, he stated, “It’s my brother’s.” He also stated they had been on the road since the previous day. When I asked Powell again where they were going, he changed his story and said North Carolina.
Due to Mr. Powell's nervous behavior and my suspicion of criminal activity, I requested additional patrol assistance to further investigate. While waiting for backup, I informed Mr. Powell that I could smell a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Mr. Powell stated, "I don't smoke weed, but the individuals in the car do." I then informed Mr. Powell that I would be
conducting a search of the vehicle based on the odor of marijuana. He stated, "I don't consent to a search of my car." I advised him that due to the strong odor of marijuana, his consent was not required. Troopers Ana Escamilla and Raul Parada arrived on scene to assist. I instructed both Mr. Gorman and Mr. Jones to exit the
vehicle. During the search, I observed U.S. currency scattered throughout the floorboards of the vehicle. I also located a gray bag in the middle of the back seat containing two clear plastic bags of marijuana, weighing approximately 160 grams, and two small brown packages containing loose tobacco from some type of cigar. While continuing the search, Trooper Escamilla located a Glock 21 with an extended magazine and a “switch”, serial number BTYV190, hidden in the spare tire compartment, wrapped in a white plastic bag. The extended magazine had a capacity of 24
rounds. The weapon had 21 rounds in it, with one of those rounds being in the chamber. Troop J Dispatch confirmed the firearm was reported stolen out of California. The “switch” renders the weapon to be fully automatic which is illegal both federally and under state statute. All three individuals were placed under arrest, read their Miranda rights. After the subjects were placed in custody, we continued the search of the vehicle. During the search, Trooper Escamilla located a pill bottle in the center console containing 38 assorted pills. Later, when DTF Agent Chad Stevenson received the evidence, he attempted to field test the pills but was
unable to identify them. DTF Agent Stevenson will send the pills to the Arkansas State Crime Lab for testing.
A total of $8,354 in U.S. currency was recovered from various locations inside the vehicle ($100 x 82, $20 x 5, $10 x 3, $5 x 3, $1 x 9). An I-phone was seized from the vehicle as well. While searching the luggage in the back, I did not see any clothing suitable for a funeral.
All three subjects were transported and booked into the Pope County Detention Center on the following felony charges:

• Possession of a Schedule I Controlled Substance with Purpose to Deliver.
• Possession of Marijuana with Purpose to Deliver
• Criminal Use of a Prohibited Weapon
• Theft by Receiving The vehicle was towed from the scene by Russellville Auto Wrecker service. All evidence and case materials were turned over to Agent Chad Stevenson of the 5th Judicial Drug Task Force for further investigation.
